Sparking a love of reading, one shelf at a time
BrightShelf was born from a simple observation: library catalog systems were designed for adults, yet millions of young readers depend on them every day. We set out to change that.
Our Story
Walk into any public library and you'll see it: a child staring at a search terminal, overwhelmed by keywords and Dewey Decimal numbers. Meanwhile, the shelves behind them are filled with incredible stories waiting to be discovered.
BrightShelf bridges that gap. We replace the traditional catalog interface with a visual, intuitive experience tailored specifically for children ages 4–12. Kids browse by cover art, interest tags, and reading level — not by ISBN. Parents get notifications when holds are ready. Librarians gain insights into what their youngest patrons actually want to read.
We're a small, focused team of educators, developers, and library advocates who believe technology should bring children closer to books — not further away. And we're just getting started.
What drives us
Our mission is to make library discovery so engaging that every child leaves with a book they're excited to read.
Joy of Reading First
Every feature we build starts with one question: does this make a child more excited to pick up their next book?
Privacy Without Compromise
Children deserve safety online. We collect the bare minimum, never sell data, and give parents full visibility and control.
Libraries Are Community Anchors
We build for librarians, not around them. BrightShelf strengthens the role of library professionals as reading guides and mentors.
Accessible to All
Reading tools should never be a barrier. We design for diverse abilities, languages, and library budgets so every child can participate.
Join us in reimagining library discovery
Whether you're a librarian, a parent, or a school administrator, we'd love to hear from you.
